Allen D. Sommerfield, 80, of Benton Harbor, passed away, Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Golden Age Manor in Stevensville.
Allen was born in Elgin, IL, on July 15, 1935. He graduated from Palatine High School, where he was a cheerleader. Allen lived in Illinois until 2000 when he moved to Michigan. He worked in construction and painting, culminating his career as a sign painter. Allen’s creativity produced many beautiful signs and decorative lettering. Allen and his wife loved the Lincoln Township Beach and they collected heart rocks together. He loved cars and worked on an old Ford truck with his pal, Ralph, which is proudly displayed today in a picture collage. Allen attended The Chapel in St. Joseph and sang in the choir for several years.
Allen is survived by his wife, Carolyn Joy; three daughters, Susan (Rick) Kolodziej, Toni Ann Petty, and Jody Lee (Jay) Stubblefield; grandchildren, Nathan and Elizabeth Joy Kolodziej; James and Lee Stubblefield; and Adam Petty. Allen was preceded in death by his parents Christian F. and Mildred (Weseman) Sommerfield.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 P.M. on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at The Chapel, 4250 Washington Ave., St. Joseph with dinner following. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 3:00 prior to the service on Sunday at the church.
