Edward Ray Schreiber

4 Condolences

Edward Ray Schreiber, 82, of Glendora, MI passed away at Pine Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Stevensville on Thursday, March 24, 2022.

Ed was born in Benton Harbor, MI on December 20, 1939 to Edward and Harriet (Erickson) Schreiber.  He was a curious little boy who loved to dismantle anything that was mechanical or electrical.

As a teenager, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1960 after serving three years as a Field Radio Repairman in Germany, where he learned to speak fluent German.

When he returned to Michigan, Transworld Volkswagen was fortunate to hire Ed as their Service Manager. His patient disposition, German communication skills and vast knowledge of mechanics were a perfect fit for a VW company.

Self-employment beckoned. Ed bought a gas station in Millburg in order to open his own VW car repair. Business boomed. To satisfy his need for speed, The Gearhead souped up his own engines to push the outer limits. More power!

Eventually, his hands led him to another passion, construction. Strictly by word of mouth, he created a successful business remodeling, restoring and constructing high-end homes on the shores of Lake Michigan and inland.

A piece of property caught his eye, and he purchased the historic heart of downtown Glendora. Over time, he transformed the old post office/grocery store into his own home.

Ed was the family historian and spent many hours researching and documenting the family’s ancestry. He enjoyed his travels to Europe where he met with several of the family members in Germany, Sweden and Holland. He was making plans to meet more of the family in Switzerland. Using his photography skills, he created countless digital albums that bring the family history to life.

Ed is survived by his faithful four-legged companion, Chase. He is also survived by two sisters, Connie R. Schreiber and Annette Messinger, and three brothers, Wesley (Cheri) Schreiber, Keith (Debbie) Schreiber, and Mark (Lisa) Schreiber; nieces and nephews, Dena, Heather, Tonia, Rachel, Cory, Tim, Kacey, Erika, Josh and Alex. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, Edward G. Schreiber, his mother, Harriet Schreiber, brothers, Daniel Schreiber and Dennis Schreiber, brother-in-law, James Messinger and nephew, Wesley Schreiber II.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 15, 2022, at the F.O.P. Hall in Coloma at 2 PM. Please bring an “Ed” story.

Donations in memory of Ed can be made to Berrien County Animal Control, 1400 S. Euclid Avenue, Benton Harbor, MI 49022,  http://www.berriencounty.org/211/Animal-Control, click Donations on the upper left-hand menu.
