Ernest Granke, a lifelong resident of Sawyer, Michigan, passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, at 95 years of age. He was born on January 16, 1926, the son of Erdman and Bessie (Hartline), in the Sawyer area. Ernest was a proud veteran of The United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Ernest’s working career started on Collins Mushroom Farm in Sawyer, where he resided during his employment. Later, he drove produce, via tractor trailer. His working career ended with Anstey Foundry Company in Stevensville, when in 1971, Ernest was injured on the job.
He took great pride in his yellow house on Towerhill Road since its purchase in 1954. Ernest could often be seen hose-watering his beautiful lawn and waving at passing cars. Ernest and his beautiful wife Patricia enjoyed watching the neighborhood children play on the many cement lawn animals they kept in their yard. Ernest spent many Sunday mornings listening to his Polka Music, which drove Patricia out of the house. He was an avid baseball fan with a special affinity for the Chicago Cubs. Patricia and Ernest loved to play cards with friends and family.
Ernest was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Patricia (Reese) Granke, who passed peacefully on December 8, 2015. Earlier in 2015, they had lost both of their sons, Dennis Granke and Edward (Dee) Granke. Dennis had two children, Elizabeth (Granke) Lambert (Matthew) and Brandon Granke (Kristy). Edward had one son, Nicholas Granke (Bridget), and gave Ernest two great grandchildren, Alexis and Emily. Earnest is also survived by Dennis’ wife Sue, and children, Josie, Samuel, Stacy, Jodie, Scott, and Kevin, as well as Edward’s wife Dennise and children, Steve, and Michelle. Ernest was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruth (Tilly), and two brothers, Julius, and Bert. He is survived by his youngest brother, Eugene. Lastly, survived by Margie (Ormiston) Brock, a niece, who was a constant in the lives of Pat and Ernie.
