James Dunning, 76, passed peacefully on Friday, July 20, at his daughter’s home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.
Jim was born in Benton Harbor on Sept. 19, 1941, to Robert and Ida (Gilson) Dunning. He owned and operated Fast Flow Gutters until his illness forced his retirement. Jim’s many interests included reading books, writing poetry, collecting antiques, building rockets and sprint car racing, but his passion was sailing Lake Michigan. He once spent a month sailing the Channel Islands off the coast of California.
Jim will be deeply missed by his wife Carol “Sue” of 53 years; his daughter, Kelly Bauer of Stevensville; sons, James (Sheri) Dunning of Riverside; Scott (Laura) Dunning of Rock Island, Ill.; grandchildren: Erica Bizer of Chicago, Nick Bizer of Stevensville, Avery and Bailey Bauer of Stevensville, Haley (Shaun) Garrison of Riverside; Alexis and Cassie Dunning of Sodus; great-grandchildren: Lilian Bizer and Liam and Mila Garrison; brothers, Robert (Betty) Dunning of Bridgman, Steve Richter of Stevensville; sister, Lori (Craig) Mandenberg of Orland Park, Ill.; and his mother, Ida Richter of Stevensville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Dunning; and stepfather, Russel Richter.
Per Jim’s wishes cremation has taken place and a private burial will take place at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paloyan and staff and Hospice at Home for their great care, and a special thank you to Keith Hafer.
Offer Condolence for the family of James Arthur Dunning
