Phyllis Jean Schneider, 93, of Benton Harbor passed away at home on Saturday, May 21, 2022, in the care of her children and a devoted team of caregivers.
Memorial services will occur at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Fairplain Presbyterian Church, 210 W. Napier Ave, Benton Harbor, with luncheon to follow.
Phyllis was the middle child and only daughter of Clemence and Willie Moore of Muncie, Ind.
She attended Danville High School, where she played marimba in the band and orchestra. After graduation, Phyllis attended Ball State Teachers College, earning a bachelor’s in education in 1951. She moved to Michigan to accept a position as a home economics instructor at Benton Harbor High School and met Larry Schneider, a fellow teacher, on Mother’s Day 1952. They married the following December and built their home on Schneider farmland overlooking the St. Joseph River while starting their family and earning master’s degrees from Ball State.
Over her 30-year career, Phyllis taught sewing, advanced tailoring, and home economics to high school and adult education students in the Benton Harbor and St. Joseph school systems. She also shared her knowledge and love of sewing with many Schneider cousins and neighborhood children, for whom she organized summer classes. Phyllis believed in precision, and Larry enjoyed recounting that she tested her students’ ability to draw a 5/8” line, the width of a standard seam.
During summers, Phyllis and Larry enjoyed extended road trips through 44 states with a tent camper—and frequently the extended Schneider clan—in tow. They also enjoyed camping on family property at Campbell Lake near Hesperia, Mich. After retiring in 1983, Phyllis and Larry spent winters at the Palmetto Palms community in Ft. Myers, Florida and travelled widely by RV, including a trip to Alaska. Although less naturally gregarious than Larry, Phyllis enjoyed entertaining family and hosted summer reunions in Michigan for the Palmetto Palms snowbirds. Phyllis will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt; welcoming mother-in-law; dedicated educator; and an all around classy lady.
Phyllis is survived by her children: Scott (Michelle Singleton), Christina, and Marc (Sue Hiering); grandchildren: Claire Schneider-Jacobs and Amelia DuBois; great-grandchildren: Layne, Rycken, and Freya DuBois; brother, Carroll Moore (Donna née Ikerd); in-laws: Milt Zoschke, Don Schneider, Bob and Carolyn (née Akright) Schneider, and Ken Schneider; her niece and longtime caregiver, Tina Schneider; and numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom launched their adult lives from Phyllis and Larry’s basement apartment and regarded Phyllis as a second mother.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and older brother, Donald (Mary Jo née Williams); her son-in-law, Robert “Jake” Jacobs; and in-laws: Duane and Betty (née Couch) Schneider, Loretta Schneider (née Kaiser), and Betty Zoschke (née Schneider).
In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis’ honor may be made to Caring Circle of Spectrum Health Lakeland, or to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sex Abuse.Print Obituary & Condolences
