William “Bill” Althouse Sr., 78, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021, after a long illness. In lieu of a traditional funeral, the family will come together at a later date for a private time of sharing and celebrating his life.
After graduating from Benton Harbor High School, Bill served his country in the US Army. During his service he was slated as an Olympic contender in boxing and on one occasion he sparred with Muhammad Ali. His civilian occupations ranged from a Benton Harbor Police Officer to a bridge tender for MDOT.
Bill loved fishing, fishing and more fishing. When he wasn’t fishing he loved traveling, watching the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame football, and was active in the FOP and Elks Club. Through the Elks Club, he coordinated several annual veterans fishing events.
His is survived by his brother, Rick Althouse, his aunt, Joyce Dennison, and his three children, Deb (Aaron) Wimbush, Denise (Terry) Beilman, and William (Tracy) Althouse. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex (Emily), Ellie, Emma, Raven, Angel, Hunter and his great grandchildren, Grace and Avery.
