William Eugene Althouse

11 Condolences

William “Bill” Althouse Sr., 78, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021, after a long illness. In lieu of a traditional funeral, the family will come together at a later date for a private time of sharing and celebrating his life.

After graduating from Benton Harbor High School, Bill served his country in the US Army. During his service he was slated as an Olympic contender in boxing and on one occasion he sparred with Muhammad Ali. His civilian occupations ranged from a Benton Harbor Police Officer to a bridge tender for MDOT.

Bill loved fishing, fishing and more fishing. When he wasn’t fishing he loved traveling, watching the Chicago Bears and Notre Dame football, and was active in the FOP and Elks Club. Through the Elks Club, he coordinated several annual veterans fishing events.

His is survived by his brother, Rick Althouse, his aunt, Joyce Dennison, and his three children, Deb (Aaron) Wimbush, Denise (Terry) Beilman, and William (Tracy) Althouse. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex (Emily), Ellie, Emma, Raven, Angel, Hunter and his great grandchildren, Grace and Avery.

His favorite quote was, “You win some, you lose some, and some just get rained out.” For those that knew him and loved him, please raise a glass and toast in his memory.

Bill was a great friend to some of the elders at the HSSM. He took in some of them where they happily enjoyed life until it was time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. For that we will be forever grateful. God speed Bill. Prayers, hugs and love to the family.🙏.
I’m sure Grandpa was there full of kisses and tail wags.
